Historic Assynt hold a wealth of information at the Community Archive at the Old Kirk Inchnadamph.

We are currently working towards digitalising the contents of the archive to make it publicly available.

Maps & Landscape

National Library of Scotland

One of the most useful resources for researching the changing landscape of Assynt. Historic Ordnance Survey maps and many earlier maps can be viewed online, compared and searched by place. The NLS provides access to hundreds of thousands of digitised maps.

HLAmap – Historic Land-use Assessment

Historic Environment Scotland’s interactive map showing present and past land use across Scotland. Particularly useful for understanding wider landscape character and change.

Archaeology and the Historic Environment

Highland Historic Environment Record (HER)

The principal online record for known archaeological sites, historic buildings and historic landscapes in the Highland Council area. It currently contains more than 100,000 records and is continually updated.

Historic Environment Scotland – Trove

The online home of Scotland’s National Record of the Historic Environment. Trove now provides access to material previously found through services including Canmore. It includes records, photographs, surveys and other information relating to archaeological and historic sites throughout Scotland.

PastMap

An interactive map bringing together information about Scotland’s archaeology, architecture and historic landscapes from HES and local authority sources. Very useful when you want to explore what is known about a particular area geographically.

Historic Environment Scotland

Useful for information on scheduled monuments, listed buildings, conservation, archaeology and the management of Scotland’s historic environment. Individual listed-building records are available online.

Archives & Historical Research

National Records of Scotland

A major source for documentary research into Scottish people, places, estates, buildings and government records. Its research guides are particularly helpful when identifying which records might answer a particular historical question.

National Library of Scotland

Beyond maps, the National Library provides access to manuscripts, books, newspapers, moving images and digital research resources relating to Scotland.
